Birth Control. Birth control is a term to describe the different techniques and methods that help prevent pregnancy. There are several types of birth control available, such as condoms, diaphragms, contraceptive injections, implants, patches and the contraceptive pill, which is one of the most common methods. The progesterone-only pill differs from the combined pill because it contains an artificial version of just the one hormone. It is an alternative for women who aren΄t able to take the combined pill, for example because they smoke or are over the age of 35. It works by thickening the mucus in the neck of the womb and thinning the lining of the womb. The combined pill is usually taken to help prevent pregnancy, however it can also be used to treat heavy, irregular or painful periods, as well as endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome and symptoms of the menopause. It is called combined because it contains artificial versions of the hormones progesterone and oestrogen, which are similar to the natural hormones made in the ovaries. This particular type of pill works by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg every month during ovulation. It also thickens the mucus in the cervix so it is difficult for sperm to reach an egg and makes the lining of the womb thinner so it less likely that a fertilized egg will be able to implant and grow. There are many different brands of the combined pill available, of which there are three main types. The most common type is monophasic pills, which are taken for 21 days, followed by seven pill-free days. The second type is phasic pills, which are split into two or three sections of different coloured pills, depending on the amount of hormone that they contain. The pills are taken for 21 days before a seven-day break and they need to be taken in the correct order. Finally, every day pills are taken for 28 days without a break, however 21 of them active pills and the remaining seven are placebo tablets. There are a number of myths surrounding the pill, such as it makes you put weight on, or it makes you become infertile, but neither of these are true and there are many advantages to using the pill as birth control. When taken correctly, the pill is more than 99 per cent effective at preventing pregnancy, which means that less than one woman in 100 taking the pill will become pregnant.

Buy from Canada. This option offers savings between 50 and 80 percent on brand-name drugs, but it's important to understand that it's illegal to import drugs from Canada. The FDA, however, does not prosecute anyone who imports prescription drugs for personal use. If you're interested in this option, see pharmacychecker.com, an independent resource that finds the lowest prices from licensed and reputable Canadian pharmacies. (Note: This is not a good option for Medicare Part D beneficiaries because it will not count toward their deductible.)
